The inspiration for this design came from the ornate granite stonework on part of the outbuildings of Symbister House. The Georgian Mansion was built in the early 1800s for Robert Bruce the Laird of Whalsay.

After the death of Whalsay’s last Laird, William Arthur Bruce in 1944 the manor house lay empty for 20 years. It was then converted in the early 1960s to become Symbister House Junior High School.
